PRINCIPLE 5 – ACCOUNTABILITY

“Accountability mechanisms should be in place to ensure that government, public institutions and public officials take responsibility for their actions and decisions and can be held to account, and that they accept any consequences or proportionate sanctions for inappropriate decisions or omissions.”


5.1 OUTCOME: Accountability framework clearly identifies, and documents matters for which the local authority and their public officials are accountable and the extent to which they are legally and financially responsible.

5.2 OUTCOME: Decisions are reported on, explained, examined and, where appropriate, questioned, or sanctioned.

5.3 OUTCOME: There are effective and proportionate remedies for inappropriate decisions or omissions and any resulting actions or inactions.
